No mechanical damage, but battery acid has damaged some of the paint. The engine compartment was thoroughly washed down with water to get rid of the acid.

The hood and left fender as well as the left side radiator support etc were destroyed. The hood is off and broken parts removed. The battery had been smashed and was removed and spilled battery acid washed off with water.

I found a used headlight assembly that had been partially disassembled and damaged. Between my old one and the used one, I had all the parts to assemble a good one. I used the new metal box and the old multi light. It now aligns correctly.

There is still a problem with the passenger side headlight. It doesn't align correctly. This light assembly will have to come back out and be inspected to see what is wrong or possibly be replaced with a used light assembly.

The hood aligned fairly well and with a bit of adjustment opened and closed OK. A new hood cable was installed.

The rear bumper doesn't sit quite right (lower in the back). Likely this can be fixed by adjusting the trunk deck that it bolts to.

front bumper was taken apart to fix a captive nut for the license plate frame. Also the fog lights which were broken were removed. The wiring and mounting brackets for the fog lights were left in place.

It looks like it will need both a new AC condenser and new radiator. Refrigerant (R12) was recovered and will be put back in after it is repaired.

exhaust straightened

The exhaust had been bent at the two 90 degree bends in the rear muffler. A chain hoist was used to pull it back into position and the rear exhaust hangers were replaced.

Used part, actually from an earlier model which has 4 tabs on the front. I don't think these tabs will cause any problem, but they could be cut off. Next step is to recover the refrigerant and replace the AC condenser and have the radiator checked out (it may be slightly bent). I also found new hood locks and strikers. I plan to replace the hood cable with new (three still exist from Honda).

AC refrigerant needs to be recovered then this can be pulled out. AC condenser needs to be replaced but radiator needs at most a new core. The hood and latch panel will need to be replaced hopefully with used parts. The right support panel can hopefully be straightened.

Non visible damage is that the exhaust system was pushed forward. This affected the bends in the pipe between the converter and muffler. Probably this can be pulled back.

Transmission /torque converter were rebuilt by a local trans shop. Rebuilt clutches, new solenoids, and one new needle thrust bearing and one new gear (damaged from thrust bearing failure). Trans cooler section of radiator was flushed out by a radiator shop.

Cylinder heads had new exhaust valve guides, a valve job, and were surfaced. New stem seals and gaskets. Honda OEM head gaskets and the rest was Ishino. Lifters were reused.

The optimum engine/trans angle is a bit steeper than this. Engine was rebuilt primarily because of low compression ~120 psi due to worn rings at ~200K miles.

This tool aligns the cam position sensor drive. The engine needs to be at TDC on #1. Note that the tab on the drive is nearly but not quite centered in the notch in the case.

The engine had run low on oil and had a melted #3 main bearing and spun #3 rod bearing. The rod in the lower left is black from decomposed oil and was replaced.

Since the engine was seized it had to be taken out with the torque convertor still on the flex plate. The trans was unbolted and moved back. A/C compressor unbolted and wired aside. Car to the right is an Austin Healey Mk II Sprite.

pistons/rods in. Note timing marks aligned on balance shaft and camshaft. Arrow or notch on top of piston goes toward front of engine. Rods can go either way around on pistons according to the shop manual.
